UK cost guide
How much does it cost to fix rising damp in the UK?
Genuine rising damp is less common than damp-proofing marketing suggests, and the cost of fixing it depends entirely on what is actually wrong. Before paying for chemical damp-proof course injection, get an independent diagnosis in writing. Ground levels, blocked airbricks and bridged damp-proof courses are often cheaper to put right than a new DPC.
Confirm the cause with an independent property inspection before agreeing to damp-proof course treatment. A Free Case Check can organise observations but cannot diagnose rising damp.

What drives the price up or down
For genuine rising damp, cost is driven by wall length, ground context and the plastering scope. For misdiagnosed cases, cost is driven by how quickly you catch the misdiagnosis.
Pushes price up
Wall length and number of walls
Chemical DPC is priced per linear metre; whole-house injection adds up fast.
Pushes price up
Solid-wall pre-1919 property
Solid brick walls with lime plaster behave differently to modern cavity walls; a competent contractor charges more for the extra care.
Pushes price up
Bridged DPC or high ground level
Path or garden level above the DPC bridges it; correcting that is groundwork, sometimes involving drainage.
Brings price down
Correct diagnosis first
A confirmed rising-damp diagnosis, in writing, from an independent surveyor is worth ten times its cost — it stops you buying the wrong treatment.
Brings price down
Cause is external, not internal
If the actual cause is a broken gutter, cracked pointing or a leaking downpipe, the fix is a straightforward external repair rather than a damp-proofing contract.
Pushes price up
Contractor guarantees insured to third parties
Ask who backs any guarantee, what it covers, its exclusions and whether its cost is separate.
Pushes price up
Listed / heritage property
Chemical injection is often inappropriate for heritage walls. Reversible, lime-based repairs are used instead and are more expensive per m².
Cheaper-first alternatives
The single biggest ‘cheaper first’ is: don’t pay for rising-damp treatment until an independent surveyor has confirmed rising damp. This one habit saves UK homeowners more money than any other in this cluster.
‘Rising damp’ that stops at 30cm, always at the same wall
Almost always condensation or a cold bridge, not rising damp. A Free Case Check is a defensible first step.
‘Rising damp’ after a rainstorm
That is penetrating damp — often a gutter or pointing repair.
‘Rising damp’ with the path raised above the airbrick
Lowering the ground level or clearing airbricks solves the problem where an inspection confirms it is appropriate; obtain a written quote.
‘Rising damp’ diagnosed from a damp meter alone
Meters read salts and moisture the same. A meter alone is not a diagnosis — insist on visual and thermal evidence.
Regional variation, multiple quotes, and red flags
Prices vary by region, by trade and by how far a surveyor or contractor has to travel. Rather than relying on a national average, get two or three written quotes for your property and compare what each one actually includes.
If a contractor arrives, opens a meter, declares rising damp and quotes for injection in the same visit, that is a sales sequence, not a diagnostic one. Independent diagnosis before any treatment.
Red flag
Rising damp diagnosed from a meter reading alone
Damp meters read salts and moisture without distinguishing them. The Building Research Establishment has cautioned against this diagnostic since the 1990s.
Red flag
Recommendation to inject a chemical DPC without checking external ground levels
Bridged DPCs from raised paths or gardens mimic rising damp perfectly. Fixing the external cause is cheaper and more effective.
Red flag
‘Lifetime’ guarantees not backed by an independent insurer
A guarantee from the contractor is only worth their continued trading. GPI-backed guarantees are the credible ones.
Red flag
No mention of salt-retardant replastering
After a DPC injection, plaster must be hacked and replaced with a salt-retardant system. If a quote skips replastering, the wall will look damp again within months.
Red flag
‘We can start Monday’ pressure
A real rising-damp job needs a diagnostic step, a scope, and drying time. Same-week starts are marketing.
Red flag
Quotes that don’t mention the external cause check
A defensible damp quote inspects the outside of the wall before recommending anything internal.
The misdiagnosis warning: read this before paying for treatment
Rising damp describes moisture moving through masonry from the ground. Confirming it requires investigation of the building and competing moisture sources; a photograph alone is insufficient.
Other causes can include condensation on a cold surface, an external defect, raised ground bridging a damp-proof course, or a plumbing leak. An inspection should consider alternatives before recommending treatment.
If you have already been quoted for chemical DPC injection: pause, and pay for an independent damp survey (RICS Building Surveyor or PCA CSDB-qualified independent, not a contractor member).
Before you spend anything
Before spending anything on rising-damp treatment, get independent confirmation. Start with a Free Case Check. If it points to rising damp, follow up with an independent surveyor — never with the contractor who wants the job.

Cost FAQs
How common is genuine rising damp in the UK?
Most cases are condensation, penetrating damp or bridged DPCs.
Does chemical DPC injection actually work?
For genuine rising damp in a suitable wall type, yes — with correct replastering. On misdiagnosed walls, it does nothing because there is no rising moisture to intercept.
Will my mortgage lender require rising-damp treatment?
Sometimes — usually when a surveyor has flagged rising damp specifically. Push back with an independent survey if the lender is relying on a contractor’s ‘free survey’.
Does a guarantee mean the treatment is trustworthy?
Only if the guarantee is insured by a third party. A contractor’s own guarantee is worth the contractor’s continued trading.
Is rising damp the same as penetrating damp?
No. Rising damp comes from the ground upward. Penetrating damp comes through the wall horizontally from external defects (gutters, pointing, cracks). Confusing them leads to the wrong fix.
